Our message was very direct. We believe that it is time for the state to become more diligent about its anti-bullying efforts. We were pleased to hear a similar level of commitment from the heads of our school districts.

WCBD TV: Legislators trying to make child sex abuse reporting mandatory for everyone

18 states require any adult who knows or suspects child abuse to report it by law. South Carolina is not one of them.

State Representative Peter McCoy now working to change that. “If you look at the way our law is structured right now, it says that your police officers, fire fighters, professors and teachers have to report if they know for a fact that child sex abuse is going on. What I want to propose is to encompass everybody. So if anybody has any actual knowledge of child sex abuse that is happening, they need to report it,” he says.

Beau Biden, son of Vice President Joe Biden, and Attorney General of Delaware, couldn’t agree more. Delaware is one of those 18 states that require anyone to report. Biden was in town Thursday night for the annual Darkness to Light fundraiser. He says, “This is a moment in time with all that is going on in the city, as well as at Penn State, where the eyes of the world are on the sad reality of pedophilia and child abuse and sexual abuse to children.”
