WDEL: AG’s office warns of utility bill payment scam

If you get a phone call, e-mail, Facebook message or other communication claiming the Feds will pay your utility bills for a month, report it to authorities. That’s the word from Attorney General Biden’s office.

Biden’s office Tuesday issued a warning about scammers who claim to be from utility companies telling potential victims that the federal government will pay their utility bills for a month, using credits offered by the Obama administration.

To “register” for the bogus program, victims have to give out their Social Security numbers and other personal info.

Biden says you should never give that information out on the phone, and if you get a call from someone claiming to be from your utility company, you should hang up and call the utility’s customer service number.

If you’ve been the victim of a scam, you can call the state Department of Justice’s Consumer Protection Hotline.
