News Journal: Cyber Monday shopping tips offered
On Cyber Monday, and throughout the holiday shopping season, consumers should be alert when making online purchases, authorities said.
“Making holiday purchases online can be a convenient alternative to the long lines and traffic jams at shopping malls and retailers,” said state Attorney General Beau Biden.
Biden suggests following these guidelines when shopping on the Internet to ensure that your purchases are safe and secure:
– Purchase only from reputable retailers that you are familiar with and retain the retailer’s physical address and phone number in case there are problems with the purchase.
– Never send personal or financial information through email because it is not a secure way and legitimate companies will not ask for your information this way.
– Pay for purchases with a credit card rather than a debit card. Using a credit card provides you with consumer protection not afforded by other payment methods.
– Always read the fine print when shopping online. Read the product description closely so you understand exactly what you are purchasing and what the website’s shipping and return policies are.
