The News Journal: As bullying’s hold on students grows, local groups are fighting back
The findings of a survey administered to high school students shows the social atmosphere in schools across the country appears to reflect an “eat or be eaten” mentality among students.
Half of the 42,000 respondents to a survey by the Josephson Institute for Ethics reported they’ve “bullied, teased or taunted someone at least once.”
And nearly half of the students said they had been the target of a bully.
The findings come after a wave of suicides by students who were victims of school bullying, catapulting the issue into the forefront of public attention in recent weeks.
An Oct. 12 candlelight vigil on the Wilmington Riverfront honored the lives of those students, and served as a rallying point for the issue of homophobic harassment and bullying in schools.
