News Journal: Delaware crime: Former Kenton treasurer charged
Former Kenton Treasurer Stephanie Mickle was arrested Wednesday by investigators from the Attorney General’s Special Investigations Unit on charges of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the town.
According to officials from the Attorney General’s Office, Mickle, 43, also made herself town manager with forged documents from the Town Council, and then sold town property for a cell-phone tower easement, diverting that money for personal use.
She was charged with three counts of theft and two counts of second-degree forgery. She was held in Baylor Women’s Correctional Facility after failing to post $63,000 secured bail.
Court records show that the tower easement was sold for $143,550 that was deposited into bank accounts that she had sole control over. The sale was not authorized by the town mayor, court files show.
Investigators also said that from 2008 to 2010, 900 fraudulent financial transactions were made by Mickle, who had complete control of the town’s bank accounts as treasurer. She paid for personal expenses by using debit cards, checks, electronic transfers and computer transactions, officials said.
