News Journal: Beau Biden, other AGs urge BP to protect East Coast

Attorney General Beau Biden has joined officials from 10 other mid-Atlantic states urging BP and its affiliates to take action to protect the eastern coastline from possible oil spill damage.

In letters released this week, attorneys general from states including Maryland, North Carolina and Massachusetts asked BP, Halliburton, Transocean and Cameron to agree to pay claims filed in the Atlantic coast states related to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The letters also asked the companies to designate an employee to work with the states on communications about the oil spill and related issues.

Though no oil has washed up on Delaware’s coast, state officials said they were acting to protect the state’s natural resources in the event the oil does reach here.

“If oil from this spill does damage Delaware’s environment and economy, we will be ready to act to hold the responsible companies accountable for our losses,” said state Solicitor Lawrence Lewis.
