Sussex Countian: Residents urged to protect themselves from Okla. tornado scams

Attorney General Beau Biden encourages Delawareans to take several steps to protect themselves against scams related to the tornado that devastated parts of Oklahoma earlier this week.

“It is wonderful to see people coming together and making donations to support the survivors of this natural disaster,” Biden said. “Unfortunately, criminals frequently use tragedies to devise creative ways to exploit our generosity for their own financial gain. I want to remind Delawareans of a few easy steps they can take to help avoid these scams.”

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden helped serve dinner to more than 30 children in West Side New Beginnings Inc.’s West Rehoboth Children and Youth Program Tuesday, May 7, and spoke to them about bullying.

West Side New Beginnings received a grant in 2011 from the Delaware Criminal Justice Council, of which Biden is a member of, and he wanted to come to see how the program has fared.

News Journal: Officials use law to force closure of nuisance property

State and county officials on Monday announced the closure of a New Castle-area property they said saw “constant criminal activity” in recent years, including drive-up drug sales, prostitution, assorted violent crime and scores of arrests.

The property at 21 Memorial Drive, owned by Paul Bembry, 68, was closed using the state’s criminal nuisance abatement law, Attorney General Beau Biden said in a statement. Biden was joined by New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon, county police, lawmakers and community leaders for the closure announcement.

Since late 2009, county police were dispatched to the site at least 177 times and arrested at least 40 different people, the officials said. The owner also was found in violation of the disorderly premises ordinance three times this year and two other times in the last two years, the news release said.

WHYY: Delaware AG Biden joins marriage equality fight

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden is one of 14 AG’s to file legal briefs with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of efforts to allow same-sex couples to marry.

The first amicus brief, filed today, argues that California’s Proposition 8 that bans same-sex marriage is a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. Tomorrow, the AG’s will file another amicus brief that challenges the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

“Marriage equality is one of the most important civil rights issues of our time,” said Biden. “The belief that everyone is equal under the law is at the core of our democracy. That belief, and the equality and the freedom that go along with it, makes America great.”
