Two Great Events in Sussex County

Yesterday was another busy day for Beau in Sussex County.

He helped kick off the Delaware Gulf Aid in the evening, a concert fundraiser for an environmentally sensitive area of Louisiana hurt by the BP oil spill. Over 1,000 people attended the concert on the beach in Dewey, organized by a coalition of concerned citizens, businesses, and environmental groups. The tens of thousands of dollars raised from the event will benefit the rehabilitation of the birds, fish, and wildlife of the Barataria-Terrebonne Estuary in Louisiana, an area which encompasses over 4.2 million acres of wetlands.

Events like Gulf Aid are “what make Delaware great,” Beau said, noting the impressive donations made by area restaurants and bands, who donated considerable time, effort and food to the event. Later in the evening, the wait staff even donated all of their tips.

Helping out at the fundraiser was not the first time Beau has been active in response to the oil spill. Last month, he joined together with other AGs to make sure BP vowed to protect the East Coast.

Earlier in the day, Beau joined Gov. Markell and House Speaker Robert Gilligan at the re-election announcement for House Majority Leader Pete Schwartzkopf. It was held on the boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach, an area that Pete has represented for four terms in the state House and protected for many years before that as a member of the State Police.

Beau thanked Rep. Schwartzkopf for parterning with him to pass legislation to protect children from predators and implement new strategies for fighting crime. As a retired State Police captain, Beau said, Pete really understands how important it is for government officials to keep citizens safe.
